Second-hand is cheaper per TH, but an 18 or 20 W/TH miner uses far more electricity than a new 12 W/TH one: it earns less each month and stops being profitable sooner if BTC falls. The right criterion is not the price but the payback time.
Tip: a second-hand miner can be upgraded down to 12 W/TH at GoMining. Then count the purchase price plus the upgrade cost.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Looking at asking prices, not sold prices: sellers often list well above what actually sells.
- Forgetting maintenance: a very cheap TH with a high W/TH can earn almost nothing.
